Karnak Temple

The Karnak Temple Complex, located in present-day Luxor (ancient Thebes), is one of the largest religious structures ever built. Construction began around 2000 BCE and continued for over 1,500 years, with contributions from numerous pharaohs. Dedicated primarily to Amun-Ra, the chief god of the New Kingdom, it also honored Mut and Khonsu, forming the Theban Triad. The complex covers over 200 acres and contains massive pylons, obelisks, sanctuaries, and the Great Hypostyle Hall with 134 towering columns. Karnak was not just a place of worship but also a political and economic hub of ancient Egypt. Its architecture reflects the wealth and power of the pharaohs who expanded it over centuries. Religious festivals, such as the Opet Festival, linked Karnak to Luxor Temple via a grand processional avenue lined with sphinxes. Today, it stands as a testament to Egypt’s spiritual, artistic, and engineering achievements.
